May 1756, Hamburg

There is certainly no shortage of good food in Hamburg, a large variety of tasty fish is obtained from the fish-abundant Elbe, and the Alster also provides large quantities to the local residents. Almost every month has its own species of fish, and the calendar contains information on the species of fish entering the market each month.

Haddocks are often delivered from Vierland — an island situated 7 miles from Hamburg. It also provides great strawberries. The city gets wonderful greens — spinach, cabbage and different roots — from another island called Oland.
