If you have decided to visit Mount Vesuvius, it would be quite wise to provide yourself with a spare pair of shoes and socks, as the hot ashes not only burn the soles of the shoes, but during the summer when the ashes are dry and one’s feet sink deep into them, the socks may also suffer.
